A rich heritage of manufacturing

Sheffield is renowned for its steel production. During the Industrial Revolution, Sheffield gained an international reputation for producing high quality steel. It was innovative in its production of crucible and stainless steel, creating the blueprint for steel manufacturing worldwide. Its population expanded greatly during this time, and the city grew considerably.

After many years of industrial decline during the 1970s and 1980s, Sheffield has now been revitalised following several regeneration schemes. The Sheffield economy is now experiencing a revival. At the beginning of the 21st century, Sheffield was the fastest growing area in the UK outside London.
