Cold air seeping through draughty windows is a huge problem for homeowners, often leading to uncomfortable temperatures and rising heating bills. There are several reasons why there may be cold air coming through your windows, but fortunately, there are also several options available to prevent those draughts.

Chips, cracks, or holes are letting a draught through your windows

One cause of cold air finding its way through your windows could be because there are chips, cracks, or holes in the glass. The damaged glass needs to be replaced as not only does it let in a draught but can lead to condensation and poses a security threat. Condensation can easily cause damp to rise and mould to grow if left untreated, which is a cause of concern for your home as well as your health. Any damage to your windows can make it easier for a burglar to break-in, as the broken panes can be enticing for criminal activity.

The chances of cracked windows increases if you live in an older property, where the windows may be more likely to be single glazed, meaning they are made up of just a single pane. As they are older and therefore more fragile, they are more likely to be affected by changes in temperature or prone to being broken on impact.

It’s a good idea to replace single glazed windows with double or triple glazing to increase energy efficiency and reduce fragility. While single glazing may be the cheaper option, both double and triple glazing provide considerably better thermal insulation levels, meaning that they can keep your home warmer for longer and help lower the cost of energy bills.

Secondary glazing is also an option as it adds an additional piece of glazing inside an existing window. However, double, or triple glazed windows are typically longer lasting and offer a better return on your investment.

Failed seals could be letting cold air through your windows

Another cause of draughty windows could be failed seals. This is where the edge seal that helps secure each pane of glass becomes damaged. Through each pane, a sealant is used to secure gas injected in the space between panes, which helps provide good quality insulation. Upon the sealant breaking, the chances of cold air coming through the window increases. Changes in the weather can often cause this, as can an original poor-quality installation or the materials eventually wearing down. Not only does a broken seal allow cold air in, but it also can allow a build-up in moisture which can cause foggy windows and even ice formation between panes in the winter.

Poor insulation is causing cold draughts through your windows

Poor insulation in your home can also lead to cold air coming through your windows. Whereas a high-quality window can help prevent the outdoor climate from affecting conditions inside, a poorly insulated window can negatively affect the temperature inside a property and cause discomfort. Not only can it lead to uncomfortable living conditions, but it can also raise the costs of energy bills due to combatting the colder internal temperature.

As the cold air enters, warm air, in turn, can often escape, leading to the need for extra heating. This can also result from gaps in the construction which leads to an unsealed opening that the outside elements can inadvertently target. Over time, if left without being properly addressed, the insufficient and ineffective insulation can even affect the property’s structure.

Older windows can be prone to warping or loosening over time, while build-ups of mould and rotted wood can also lead to draughty windows, generally because of condensation. Proper insulation and draught-proofing can aid the prevention of condensation. Typically occurring in wooden frames, warped windows can reduce your home’s energy efficiency as gaps can appear, leading to cold air venturing through and into your home.

UPVC windows have excellent thermal insulation to minimise heat transfer and heat loss. A traditional option, casement windows offer a smooth, simple design, and the uPVC element allows maintenance to be kept at a minimum.

Damaged windows can let in cold air

Naturally, damage in any way to the windows or frames can lead to problems with the prevention of draughts in the property. Changes in the weather can cause joints and the caulking in the frames to separate, while cracks can open up and close depending on those weather changes.

Damage to the hinges can also prevent the window from closing as it should, which lets in cold air, and the double glazing becomes less useful. Not to mention, damaged hinges and the subsequent inability to close correctly can also present a security risk for your home.

Overall, it is essential to ensure that your windows are in good condition. Any faults or damage, be it cracks or failed seals, will negatively impact your home’s thermal efficiency. Ensuring that you are doing everything you can to keep your windows insulated effectively is something to prioritise if you are getting draughts through your windows.

New Window and Window Swap

Had Global swap an existing window for a new bi-fold door and install a completely new window in our dining room. As hoped, both have created a lot of addition light. I have used Global in the past and would use again in the future. Professional service provided from the office staff. They were the only business I spoke to that was aware of the new building control regulations that were introduced at the start of October last year and therefore acted as Principal Designer keeping the works compliant. The guys that completed the work were very respectful, polite and tidied up after themselves. Would recommend.
