Double Glazing vs Single Glazing: Unveiling the Superiority of Insulation and Efficiency
Most people have heard the term ‘double glazing’ at some point in their lives. It’s common knowledge that it’s something that indicates a better thermal performance than single glazing, but what exactly is double glazing and how does it work? Here at Global Windows, we know it’s important that you know just what it is you’re purchasing for your home, so we thought we’d take the time to explain double glazing to you.
Double glazing itself is the method of using two panes of glass within a window or door whilst leaving a pocket of air between the two panes. A glass product without double glazing would just have a single pane of glass. Having a single pane of glass is less than ideal because glass itself is a good conductor of heat, meaning that heat travels through it with ease. The result of this is much of the heat within a room simply leaves through the single pane of glass in the window.
Why is Double Glazing Important?
Double-glazed windows have two panes of glass with a pocket of argon gas between them, meaning the heat that would normally escape gets trapped between the two panes of glass. Air is a poor conductor of heat, so the heat doesn’t travel through it so easily. As you would expect, much less heat is lost in a double-glazed home so it’s easier to maintain a low heating bill if your windows are double-glazed.
Double-glazed windows aren’t only the better option thanks to their thermal efficiency, they’re also safer. Since there’s two panes of glass, it’s harder for the window to shatter, meaning you and the ones you care about can feel safe and secure. Two panes of glass also help decrease the level of outside noise that can be heard within your home as sound has a tougher time getting through the window. This is particularly useful if you live in a busy residential area.
