Wakefield – ‘The Merrie City’

Steeped in history, Wakefield presents notable evidence of human activity since prehistoric times. Over the years it has been a Royalist stronghold, producers of corn, coal and textiles; storing grain in large warehouses built on the river banks for neighbouring Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Lincolnshire.

Home to one of Yorkshire’s most famous residents, artist and sculptor Barbara Hepworth, Wakefield now houses the architecturally stunning Hepworth Gallery. Opened in 2011, it provides glorious views of the River Calder, as well as must-see local landmarks such as the Emley Moor transmitting station (the UK’s tallest freestanding structure) and Wakefield Cathedral – which boasts the tallest spire in Yorkshire.
